They do not see Commander S'ten, they see a fake Commander S'ten backlit by the Bajoran Orb that is slowly rotating inside his torso!

 Mel surreptitiously pings Armina and asks her to send the real Commander S'ten to the bridge, while Ssleestak stares at the false S'ten and mutters, "Yeah, that's the one, captain." Ssleestak realizes that the changeling has warped his body over the Orb ark to carry it without it being noticed. On the viewscreen, the false Commander S'ten introduced himself and asks, //"How are you here, this far into Dominion space?"// Mel replies, "There was an accident, and we were thrown through space and time." She draws out her explanation to stall for time but adds at the end, "We have a way home, and we figured you'd want to come too!"
